2020 BMW X5 M Prices, Reviews, and Pictures

Overview

The 2020 BMW X5 M represents what happens when enthusiasts love big horsepower and bean counters want more SUV sales. Although we wouldn’t describe the culmination as a perfect storm the X5’s twin-turbo V-8 makes thunderous and lightning-quick acceleration. This is combined with the M division’s special suspension tuning and fat tires, and you get one of the most wild crossovers on the planet. The X5 M is a great crossover, despite its high price tag. It can handle incredible speed and cornering maneuvers that require neck-straining. The interior is spacious and elegant, accommodating up to five people and plenty of storage space. The 2020 X5M is also a high-tech and sophisticated vehicle.

What’s new for 2020?

The new 2020 BMW X5 M is the third generation of the most sporty X5 SUV from the Bavarian automaker. The new X5 M is more powerful than its predecessor, boasting 33 horsepower more in the standard trim and 50 more horsepower in the Competition version. Other than that, the rest of these changes are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. The X5M’s redesigned sheetmetal, improved interior, and modernized technology make it better than ever.

We know that our money will go to the more sporty Competition model. It comes standard with more horsepower and a more powerful exhaust system. The X5 M Competition also comes with a nicer leather interior and padding at the sides of its center console, to protect your knees from being bruised during hard cornering.

Engine, Transmission, & Performance

Every 2020 X5M has a monster under its hood. Two turbochargers force air into the 4.4-liter V-8 engine, which generates 600 horsepower. The X5 M Competition is a further improved version that produces another 17 horsepower. Both Bimmers use an eight-speed automatic transmission as well as a variable all wheel-drive system. This allows the driver to choose between increased traction at all four wheels and greater agility in the rear-biased mode. Standard equipment includes a set of 21-inch wheels with adaptive dampers. You can also choose a set of 22-inchers at the back and a staggered set. Competition models have larger rear wheels. A Competition model was impressive in our recent test drive. It had sports car-like handling in corners and accelerated with incredible acceleration.

Fuel Economy and Real World MPG

The X5M produces a lot of horsepower, which is evident in the EPA fuel economy ratings. The Competition and the standard X5M both deliver 13 mph in the city, 18 mpg on the highway and 15 mpg together. As soon as the X5M is tested on our 200-mile highway fuel-economy loop, we’ll be able to see how it compares with its EPA highway estimate.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo

The interior of the X5M is beautifully appointed and equipped with many desirable features. Behind the leather-wrapped steering column, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster sits. It also houses a pair paddle shifters as well as red “M” drive mode buttons. All standard features include ambient interior lighting, large head-up displays, heated steering wheels and front armrests. For an additional cost, you can get leather upholstery with heated or cooled cushions in the front and rear seats. You can also add heated rear seats and heated back seats. The front and rear passenger spaces are ample, as well as the cargo space that can hold 11 carry-on bags behind the back row.

Connectivity and Infotainment

2020 X5M has a loaded infotainment and many connectivity features. Displaying the company’s iDrive software on a 12.3-inch touchscreen, it can be controlled via hand gestures, voice commands and a rotary controller located in the center console. Apple CarPlay integration, Harman/Kardon’s audio system and Harman/Kardon stereo are all standard features. Bowers & Wilkins’ rear-seat entertainment system and stereo are available as an option. Android Auto is not available.
