While not everyone will envy the 2020 BMW X6 M’s fastback roofline and twin-turbo V-8, they will all be impressed by its fire-breathing twin turbo V-8. The engine produces up to 617 horsepower, and an exhaust note that will raise your hairs. The X6 version is based on the similarly raucous BMW X5 M. It’s also insanely fast and can keep up with legitimate sports cars. The car’s unassuming exterior is offset by its luxurious interior and many desirable features. The six-figure price tag for the Bimmer is prohibitive for most SUV buyers and enthusiasts. The 2020 X6M is still the best-selling body type.
What’s new for 2020?
The regular BMW X6 is now in its fourth generation. However, the 2020 X6M has just entered its third. Although it’s difficult to see the differences between the new model and its predecessor, there are notable improvements. It is now between 33 and 50 horsepower more powerful than the previous model. The bodywork has received a subtle, but more striking makeover. Additionally, the cabin has been updated with better technology and a modernized aesthetic.
It is hard to believe that a vehicle with less functionality can be priced higher. The 2020 X6M is $3500 more expensive than its squareback cousin, the X5M. However, we prefer the cheaper body style but the 6 attracts more attention. We believe the Competition model should be your choice. It has 617 horsepower, which is 17 more than the regular model. However, it also comes with better standard equipment. It features a sport-tuned exhaust and an exclusive Track mode. The rear wheels are 22 inches, instead of 21 inches. To reduce the punishment of hard cornering, the X6 M Competition has a more luxurious leather interior and knee padding at its center console.
Performance, Transmission and Engine
The 2020 X6 M has the same powerful engine as the BMW M5 sedan. It is powered by a twin-turbo 4.4L V-8. It produces 600 horsepower and 553 lbft of torque in its original state, and 617 ponies when it is upgraded to Competition. It can be hooked up to an 8-speed automatic transmission, which feeds a dynamic all wheel-drive system. The drivetrain can be set to send most power rearward or distribute it to all four wheels to maximize traction. In addition to its selectable drive modes, including customizable settings that can be activated via steering-wheel-mounted buttons, the X6 M even features adjustable brake-pedal feedback. Standard adaptive dampers are included on the BMW, along with a set 21-inch wheels. However, a pair 22-inchers can also be added to the X6 M Competition.
Fuel Economy and Real World MPG
According to the EPA, the X6M will get 13 mpg in the urban area and 18 mpg highway. These ratings are identical with the X5M. Unfortunately, we were not able to test both Bimmers on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route. As such, we cannot evaluate their real-world efficiency.
Interior, Comfort, & Cargo
The 2020 X6M combines sportiness with luxury in its carbon-fiber accents, standard leather upholstery and carbon-fiber interior. The 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is complemented by a large head up display and high-tech features. These features are complemented by ambient interior lighting, heated rear seats and heated front seats, as well as heated surfaces and massaging front seats. A useful center-console and a coverable bin under the center stack highlight interior cubby storage. Although the coupe-like shape doesn’t impact how comfortable it is for passengers in front and back, the reduced cargo area caused by the sloping roofline can reduce its cargo space. Traditional X5 M offers 34 cubic feet of space behind the back row, while the X6M has just 27 cubes.
Connectivity and Infotainment
A large 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system adorns the center of the dash on every 2020 X6 M. It uses BMW’s latest iDrive software and can also be operated via hand gestures, voice commands, and a center-console-mounted rotary controller. Android Auto is not available, but other popular features like Harman/Kardon audio system and Apple CarPlay integration are. You can also choose from a Bowers & Wilkins stereo or rear-seat entertainment system.
